    The National Recruiting Campaign Begins

Reading, writing, and really big trucks

An old adage has it that where some see problems, others see solutions. The latest example of that is a California high school's creative response to the nation's growing shortage of commercial truck drivers.

To help meet skyrocketing demand for qualified truck drivers, a high school in Patterson, Calif., said in February that it had opened a truck-driving program for its students and the general community. Patterson High School's commercial driving course helps students develop the knowledge and experience necessary for the truck-driving profession, the school says. Through a partnership with the regional transportation firm Morning Star Trucking, graduates will have the opportunity to obtain free behind-the-wheel training and even apply for seasonal employment to help them pay for college, according to a promotional video.

The year-long course includes 180 hours of classroom instruction, demonstrations, hands-on exercises, and simulator experience, ultimately preparing students to take the commercial driver's license (CDL) written exam. The truck-driving course is the latest logistics industry initiative to come out of Patterson High School, which in 2016 opened the Supply Chain and Logistics Training Center, an academic facility that offers four classrooms and three working warehouses to prepare students for jobs in the sector.

Truck-driver doll encourages girls to dream of 18-wheeled careers

Women In Trucking teams up with toy maker to market truck-driver stuffie.

When talk turns to career aspirations, parents often urge their young daughters to reach for the stars. But the trade group Women In Trucking (WIT) has been working to promote a more terrestrial alternative: piloting a big rig right here on Earth.

Taking a page from the 'get 'em while they're young „playbook, the Plover, Wis. -based nonprofit has made it its mission to raise awareness among youngsters about career opportunities in trucking. In 2014, for example, it teamed up with the Girl Scouts to design a 'Trucks are for girls” transportation patch. Now it appears the group is targeting an even younger crowd: Last month, it announced that it had collaborated with European toymaker Haba to introduce a plush WIT-themed doll.

The 13-inch-tall doll, named „Clare,” comes clad in an 'I Heart Trucking „T-shirt, red collar shirt, blue jeans, boots, and a Women In Trucking baseball cap. The story of her journey into the driver's seat of her very own 18-wheeler can be found on the package. To promote the doll's launch, WIT will make Clare the centerpiece of its 'I Heart Trucking” photo contest this summer. Themed 'Clare's First Road Trip," the contest will invite professional drivers across the country to submit photos featuring Clare from the road.

According to a WIT press release, Clare is the product of a chance meeting between Ellen Voie, WIT's founder and chief executive officer, and Lea Culliton, president of Haba USA, in an airport lounge. The talk turned to designing an empowering toy for girls, and a partnership was born. 'The world is wide open for girls today, and I'm thrilled to be providing a toy that tells them that whatever they want to be is just great—whether that's a teacher or an ad exec or a professional driver," Voie said in the release.

Clare will be available at travel centers across the country in April as well as on Amazon. com and on the Haba website.

Company launches IT platform to speed driver medical exam process

Pass My Physical platform sets digital alerts to facilitate process.

Pass My Physical, a cloud-based technology company, said today it has launched a platform designed to eliminate most delays associated with the Department of Transportation (DOT) medical examination process for commercial truck drivers. Drivers must pass a medical exam and be certified by a certified medical examiner to gain and hold a commercial drivers' license (CDL).

The platform is comprised of a mobile app for drivers and a web-based application for motor carriers, the Syracuse, N. Y. -based company said. Once their information is added into the mobile application, it populates the exam form which can be printed off at any time, the company said. CMV drivers understand what they need for their exam, and they are provided with regular reminders as well as solutions such as personalized medical clearance letters to ensure they have everything ready prior to the exam.

Drivers can use the mobile app to interact with their motor carrier's web application, the company said.

Motor carriers can use the web application to track the exam status for all of their drivers. They can also be notified when drivers need to update their certification, when an examiner's certificate is about to expire, and when changes in medical regulation or guidance occur, the company said.

'The nature of DOT physical exams has historically led to delays in medical certification due to exam complexity and ambiguity, „Dr. David Thorpe, Pass My Physical's president, said in a statement. 'By streamlining the exam process, the platform eliminates most delays and helps keep freight moving with more medically qualified drivers, ensures new hires arrive at a terminal prepared to take the medical exam, and reduces medical certification costs by eliminating the need to retake the exam.”

On the one hand, maybe this is a good thing. On the other, this feels like they are indoctrinating people who are too young to know they are being taken advantage of.

Kinda puts all this hoopla about the autonomous revolution to rest and the trucking profession becoming obsolete in the near future.
